Leela AI is a Boston-area startup developing a software layer (called Leela) to provide real-world common sense reasoning and decision making for robots. Leela is different because she teaches herself about her environment, learning about causation rather than mere correlation. She can tackle problems that have bedeviled AI for a long time: generalizing from small numbers of examples, catastrophic forgetting, and developing common sense. By combining modern ML algorithms with a constructivist system for active knowledge creation, Leela explores her environment, learn how it works, and creates common sense knowledge without any rewards or supervision. She then uses this knowledge to make highly explainable plans and decisions. Using a novel embodied language-concept architecture, Leela is able to communicate with users with a much deeper level of understanding of meaning than current systems. The Leela layer will be able to support a wide range of challenging robotic business use cases thanks to a sensor and action-space independent architecture.
